Arkansas Dirt Boy

On the old muddy creek banks, I spent sunny days
throwing rocks in the shade of the trees
I'd come back to the house all covered in dirt
caked up on my shirt and my knees.
Things moved slow in a small country town-
we were poor, but hell, we were free
and freedom was probably the best thing around
for an Arkansas dirt boy like me.
We all had our heads full of big city dreams,
of making it out of this place,
but leaving's not easy as it usually seems
and dreams can get lost in the race.
Still, I longed for a life like a troubador's song
because man, I was too blind to see
that home was waiting right here all along
for an Arkansas dirt boy like me.
When it's my time, they can lay me to rest
is the shade of a sycamore tree
and an old white pine casket would probably be best
for an Arkansas dirt boy like me.
